Building a Million-Dollar Business: The Power of Coaching, Consulting, and Organizational Development

You didn’t leave your 9–5 to work 24/7. You left because you wanted freedom, impact, and wealth. You wanted to call the shots, make a difference, and finally create something of your own. But here’s the harsh truth: most founders trade one job for another—only this time they’re working longer hours, carrying more stress, and shouldering the weight of every decision.

That was me.
When I opened my first veterinary hospital, I thought hard work alone would guarantee success. I was smart, motivated, and determined to serve my clients well. But there was no coach to help me think like a leader. No consultant to guide me on pricing, systems, or growth. No organizational development support to help me build and keep a thriving team. Everything depended on me—and within five years, the business went bankrupt.
I wasn’t just financially wrecked. I was exhausted. Burnt out. I loved the work, but I hated the business.
Looking back, I can see exactly what was missing. Those lessons are why I now teach women founders that building a million-dollar business requires three things working together: coaching, consulting, and organizational development.
Coaching: Growing the Leader
Coaching is about you—the entrepreneur, the founder, the leader-in-progress. A coach doesn’t swoop in with answers; they help you uncover your own clarity and conviction. They challenge the way you think, push you to draw boundaries, and help you step out of “employee mode” and into the CEO role your business needs.
In my first business, I desperately needed someone to ask: “Why are you still doing everything yourself?” I needed someone to help me say no, to carve out space to think strategically, and to remind me that being busy isn’t the same as building. Without coaching, I stayed in the weeds, and the weeds eventually swallowed me.
With coaching, you become the kind of leader who can stop reacting and start directing—who can think bigger, decide faster, and lead with clarity.
Consulting: Building the Business
While coaching focuses on the leader, consulting focuses on the business. It’s about diagnosing what’s broken or missing and providing the tools to fix it. Consultants bring frameworks, strategies, and systems. They look at your pricing model, customer journey, SOPs, and dashboards. They don’t just talk about goals—they map out how to get there.
Had I hired a consultant for my veterinary practice, we would have built clear, documented processes instead of relying on my memory. We would have priced our services for profitability instead of guessing. We would have created systems that ran without me, giving me my time back. Instead, I had a business held together by my sheer effort—and no business can survive that forever.
Consulting turns chaos into clarity. It provides a roadmap you can follow and a structure that can be scaled.
Organizational Development: Powering the People
Finally, there’s organizational development—often the missing piece for small and growing businesses. OD is about people and culture. It’s the discipline that keeps teams aligned, motivated, and engaged, enabling them to execute the vision without burning out or bailing out.
OD means defining what the company stands for and turning that into daily behaviors. It means creating clear roles, designing onboarding processes that work, and setting rhythms for communication and feedback. It’s how you keep great people and build a culture where they want to stay.
At my hospital, turnover wasn’t terrible—but that’s only because I carried the weight myself. I didn’t build a culture where others could thrive without my direct guidance. When I burned out, so did the business. Organizational development could have created a team that owned results, freeing me to focus on strategy.
With OD, your company becomes bigger than you. It becomes a place where people do their best work, stay longer, and scale impact together.
Why You Need Coaching, Consulting, and Organizational Development
Here’s what happens when you rely on only one:
Coaching alone gives you clarity and confidence—but no systems to run with.
Consulting alone gives you a plan and playbooks—but no leader to execute them.
Organizational development alone gives you a better culture—but no commercial engine to sustain it.
When you bring them together, you get transformation: a confident CEO, a business with systems that scale, and a team strong enough to deliver results. That’s the Ready Set Grow way—and it’s the opposite of the “work harder, do more” trap that burns out founders.
What It Feels Like Before—and After
Before: You’re busy from dawn to dusk, but you’re not sure you’re making real progress. You feel like the only one who can keep things running. Growth feels heavy, not exciting. Your business is running you.
After: You’re focused on the right things, not everything. You have systems and dashboards that give you control. Your team is engaged and accountable. Growth feels structured and doable. You’re running the business, not the other way around.
That’s the shift coaching, consulting, and organizational development bring together.
Why This Matters for Women Founders
Here’s the bigger picture: women don’t just build businesses for profit. We build them for purpose—uplifting communities, shifting industries, creating opportunities for others. But to do that at scale, we need to be more than hustlers. We need to be leaders of companies that last.
When I see women building million-dollar businesses, I see more than money. I see power—power to change industries, influence culture, and yes, change the world. But it doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you grow yourself, build your systems, and empower your people.
